Project Overview

As a refresher, I am working on a game-ready environment based on Nacho Yague's concept art from Watch Dogs 2. Last time I updated you guys I managed to start a wood material for the floor, and starting finalising some of the assets in scene.

Current Progress

Last time I was working on a wood floor material, this was my first time using designer properly so I was still getting used to it. Since then I have edited the material to fit the scene a bit better.

I will probably go back to this material in a few weeks time when I'm more experienced with Substance Designer, but for now the material works well in scene.

Alongside this material I also started to experiment to create a plaster wall material for the scene. I tried a simple technique at first by just grabbing two noise maps and warping them into a blend to create the wall material.

But then after putting this in scene I wasn't too happy with the result. So instead of editing the material I created I decided to try and experiment some more and create a different material.

The texture of the wall on this material feels better for the scene I am creating so I felt that this worked well.

To get to know Substance Designer a bit more I just messed around to see what else I could make. I then ended up making a material that looks like foil, at first I had no use for this I thought maybe I could use it for some Air Conditioning tubes on the ceiling, but they would be a galvanised steel material. So instead I could use this material on some small objects like food wrapped up in foil.

Also this week my original plan was to create a more modular wall system for the scene, after some consideration I realised that this was not needed as this is only going to be a portfolio piece, if this scene was going to be in a game I would create a more modular scene. I did however change the walls and windows to be more accurate to my height as at first it did not work very well and the scale seemed off.

Since then I have also started to make more meshes for the scene to fill it out and make it feel more cluttered. The main asset I focused on was creating the first pass on the wrestling ring mesh. I am still undecided on if I want the ring to have a cover over the top or to leave it open and use the underneath as a storage area.

Overall the scene is finally starting to come together and I am feeling a lot better about the overall composition so far. There is still alot to be changed but I'll get there!

Whats Next?

The plan for next week is to start to get some more materials done on the assets, I will be making a decal sheet so I can do some mesh decals on assets such as the monitors and pcs.

Catch you all later! ;)

Em x
